How to See the Real World: Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

If you’re not getting out of your comfort zone to build your network and job search then you’re missing an extremely powerful tool in your ninja tool set.

According to Joseph Walker in an April 23, 2012 article Google, Facebook Employees Too Fat and Happy – Technology and IT Jobs News and Advice on FINS Technology:

Employees at these two firms have every single one of their wants and needs provided by their employers, which means they hardly ever have to leave the office. And because they never leave the office, they’re not experiencing what it’s like to go through life dependent on a smartphone. Luxury coach buses shuttle employees to and from the office. Free breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided so that they never have to walk outside.

The whole point of Joseph’s article is to show that workers in big tech firms are so trapped in their comfort zone that they’re hardly seeing the major trends in smartphone use that are right in front of their eyes:  the very people who are using smart phones on subways, street corners and the like.

What are you doing to get out of your comfort zone and see the problems that really need solving?

That really need your skills?

Are you meeting with employers and hearing their problems first hand?

Avoid getting lazy by being an arm chair job seeker in front of a computer all day – get out there and learn first hand what really needs solving.

Fair winds,
